With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our fellow Gregory Rotarian, Elmer Karl. Elmer passed away on July 15 at the age of 94. He had been a faithful member of our Rotary Club since 1957. Elmer truly exemplified our Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." It was more than a slogan to him—it was the way he lived his life.
Throughout the years, he served as a Gregory City Council member, Mayor of Gregory, a member of the Masons and Shriners, a founding member of the Gregory Economic Development Group, a volunteer firefighter for more than 30 years, and an active member of the Gregory United Methodist Church, where he faithfully served on numerous boards and committees.
Elmer gave unconditionally to his community, his church, and every organization of which he was a part. His generosity, leadership, and willingness to serve left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
In his final months, Elmer was still able to attend several Rotary meetings. Whether we brought him to our noon meetings or held our meetings at the Rosebud Country Care Center, he was always grateful for the opportunity to be with the club and remain involved. His presence reminded us all of the importance of fellowship and service.
To those of us who knew him, he wasn't "Mr. Karl" or "Elmer Karl." He was simply Elmer—a trusted friend, a mentor, and someone who made everyone feel welcome. He lived a life of purpose, integrity, and quiet generosity, leaving behind an example that will continue to inspire us for years to come.
Thank you for your friendship, your service, and your unwavering commitment to making Gregory a better place.
We will miss you, Elmer.
