I had the opportunity to attend the Rotary International Conference in Calgary in June. This is the third international conference in which I have actively participated since joining Rotary. These events are inspiring, educational and a lot of fun. The flag ceremony at the beginning of the opening session is always very moving for me, where the flag of each country in which Rotary is present is carried across the stage.

This year the flags of the 8 First Nations people in Canada were also included, which was special. There are many inspiring and entertaining speakers during the general sessions. A highlight this year was seeing Geena Davis, who gave a wonderful talk about a research group she founded several years ago which showed how few children's movies have been made with a girl as the lead. Her research has helped improve those statistics. There were talented musicians with inspiring stories. Presentations from the leader of the World Health Organization and Bill Gates of the Gates Foundation highlighted the important work Rotary does in polio eradication and disease prevention. There are many informative breakout sessions. I learned about projects surrounding literacy, peace and cervical cancer prevention. Every evening was an opportunity for a fun event.

What I have learned from my experience is how fun it is to be around like-minded people who just want to do good in the world. I also found my WHY—why I want to be involved in a great organization like Rotary. It is wonderful to be part of a group who wants to improve the lives of others, preserve our beautiful earth and promote peace.
