Back in September, Yankton Rotarians Mike Villanueva and Rich Burns got together in Guatemala City, Guatemala with fellow Rotarians from California, Kansas, Mexico, Netherlands, Honduras, and Guatemala to gain an understanding of the issues surrounding the Motagua River and its associated watershed. The Motagua River Basin contributes 3% of all plastics entering the oceans worldwide.
In 2023, Rotary International signed on as an international partner to the Motagua River Alliance. The Rotary Club of Yankton with a pledge of $10,000 in support from District 5610 has established itself as an International Partner working with the Rotary Club of Puerto Cortes, Honduras to not only remove plastics from the river and ocean but to also provide economic and educational development to the communities currently impacted by the Motagua River. Yankton Rotary looks forward to its continued involvement as we moved into 2025.
