Young riders in Luverne who wear a helmet and follow the rules could get a free ice cream, thanks in part to the Luverne Rotary Club.
The City of Luverne and the Rock County Sheriff's Office have launched a safety campaign aimed at kids riding e-bikes, electric scooters, and other micronized vehicles. The idea came from a Civic Assembly group that looked at the growing number of these vehicles around town and the risks they pose to riders and pedestrians. The group recommended focusing on education and encouragement instead of citations.
The campaign includes infographics, short videos, social media posts, and "popsicle pop-ups" where kids can pick up safety tips. Deputies will also carry ice cream vouchers to hand out when they see a young rider wearing a helmet and riding safely.
Rotary is supporting the effort with a $250 donation for popsicles and vouchers, along with free bicycle helmets for kids who don't have one.
The campaign runs through the rest of the summer and will continue through the end of 2027. It's a perfect example of "Service Above Self". Supporting local law enforcement, encouraging safe habits, and looking out for Luverne's kids, one helmet and one popsicle at a time!
